Timeline & Map

In 2015, a well-known user on Taiwan’s largest Bulletin Board System, PTT, who went by the name “obov” started to comment “you’re a moaning sow” on all posts written by women after being temporarily banned from posting for making this comment on one post written by a woman. This post unexpectedly led many who were fans of obov to jokingly start a group named “sow” and named obov as its founding father. From this time, many Internet users have begun using “sow” as a term to attack women who they think are not behaving properly and also to comment on women and categorise them, which results in a slow but certain consolidation of existing prejudices and misogyny.
