Abolition of the Family Registry (Hoju) System

The Family Registry (Hoju) System was first establlished during the Japanese colonial era and caused many issues regarding female discrimination and diversity in family types from the unfair order of the Family Registry, unconditional patriarchical hierarchy, and a probation period of marriage for women. Therefore, the Civil law began to be revised from 1958. In 2005, with the decision of unconformable to the Constitution by the Constitutional Court of South Korea, the amendment of the Civil law abolitionizing the Hoju System was promulgated. After that, in 2008, the Hoju System was changed to Family Relation Registration System, family relationships began to be registered based on individuals.
